H2: Our Mission
Most people who visit Japan leave with beautiful photographs and a checklist of landmarks visited. Fewer leave having truly understood what they experienced.
Japan Understood exists to change that.
We are a media channel built on a single conviction: that understanding Japan — its spiritual traditions, its ancient history, its cultural logic — makes the experience of being there infinitely richer.
Our content is built for the curious traveller, the Japan enthusiast, and anyone who has stood before a Shinto shrine and wondered: what is this place, really?
[WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT SECTION]
H2: Why We Exist
Japan has hundreds of travel channels. Tour guides, food bloggers, vlog series. They are useful. They are not what we do.
Japan Understood operates in a different space entirely:
We focus on the things that don’t show up in guidebooks.
The mythology behind shrine architecture. The imperial lineage stretching back to the age of gods. The philosophical framework of ma — negative space — that underlies Japanese aesthetics. The reason Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines stand side by side throughout Japan, and why that coexistence is one of the most remarkable stories in religious history.
This is content that requires research, care, and deep respect for Japanese culture. That is what we bring to every video, article, and post we publish.

H2: What We Cover
Shinto & Japanese Spirituality
The indigenous spiritual tradition of Japan — its kami (spirits), its shrines, its rituals, and the way it permeates everyday Japanese life in ways most visitors never notice.
Imperial History & Mythology
Japan’s imperial line is the oldest continuously reigning dynasty in the world. The mythology and history behind it — stretching back to Amaterasu, the sun goddess — is one of the most extraordinary stories in human civilisation.
Cultural Traditions
Tea ceremony, ikebana, the aesthetics of wabi-sabi, the social logic of wa (harmony) — Japan’s cultural traditions are rich, layered, and endlessly fascinating when explored with proper depth.
Travel Etiquette & Practical Understanding
Not just what to do, but why. Understanding the cultural reasoning behind shrine etiquette, onsen rules, chopstick customs, and temple behaviour transforms a polite tourist into a genuinely respectful visitor.

H2: Who We Are
Japan Understood is produced by a dedicated team of researchers, writers, and content creators who share a deep fascination with Japanese culture, history, and spirituality.
We are not a single creator. We are a team.
Our work draws on primary sources, scholarly research, and a commitment to accuracy that we believe is rare in online Japan content. Every factual claim in our videos and articles is checked. Every cultural statement is made with care.
We do not sensationalise. We do not simplify for cheap engagement. We trust our audience to handle the real depth of this material — and they reward us for it.

H2: Our Values
Accuracy above all.
Japan’s history, mythology, and culture deserve to be represented correctly. We check our facts, acknowledge uncertainty where it exists, and correct mistakes openly.
Respect, not reverence.
We love Japan deeply. That love does not prevent us from exploring complex or difficult topics — it requires us to do so honestly.
Depth over reach.
We would rather have a smaller audience that genuinely learns something than a large audience that was merely entertained. Depth is our competitive advantage.
